One More Life Transformed By The Gift of Mobility.

Flor's Story

12-year-old Flor lives in a village of 100 people, located high in the Peruvian Andes.

Flor was born healthy, but when she was six months old, a vaccine she received resulted in a high fever that went untreated for two weeks because her parents, who work as farmers, could not afford medical treatment.

When Flor experienced major swelling, her parents finally took her to a doctor, who diagnosed her with meningitis.

The injury to her brain has slowed down her development: while Flor continues to grow in size, her neurological functions have not developed at the same pace. Her mother had been carrying her to school, but she wouldn’t be able to do so much longer, as Flor’s height and size will soon eclipse her own petite frame.

Imagine her joy when she received her very first wheelchair–which happened to be the one-millionth wheelchair distributed by Free Wheelchair Mission. Hear more of her story in this short documentary by Visionaries, a television program on PBS.

Flor's story is just one of the million stories that we have collected. Her story is not unique. We receive similar stories on a weekly basis from our distribution partners around the world. The World Health Organization estimates that there are 75 million people in the world that are in need of a wheelchair but do not have the means to afford one.
