Ricardo’s story takes place in the highlands of Guatemala.
Now 69 years old, Ricardo spent three long years adjusting to life after a fall left him with a spinal cord injury.
Everyday tasks had become a struggle, and moving around his home—let alone getting to medical appointments—was a constant challenge. His wife Melyn, son Rony, and sisters were steadfast in their support, helping him navigate a world that suddenly felt limiting.
This past June, Melyn and Rony brought Ricardo to a mobility clinic held by our local partner, Faith in Practice, and staffed by seven Free Wheelchair Mission supporters on a vision trip. Among them were longtime supporters Janet and Dave Grattan.
Janet, a physical therapist, assessed Ricardo and fitted him with a new GEN 2 wheelchair. As Rony lifted him into the chair, Ricardo’s eyes lit up at the thought of resuming outdoor strolls with his wife, returning to church, and enjoying simple family outings to the park—activities he hadn’t experienced in years. For Rony, who had spent so much energy helping his father get to his medical appointments, the wheelchair brought much-needed relief.

“It’s remarkable how a wheelchair changes someone’s world—and their community,” Janet said. “It gives hope, dignity, and the reminder that they are not forgotten. I am blessed to be part of this ministry.”
Janet continued, “We have a heart for Free Wheelchair Mission, as we have seen firsthand how the gift of a wheelchair changes lives. This gift—as well as showing up and praying over the recipient, and, often, their family—provides hope. This hope can bring people closer to Christ. Nothing is better than that!”
Over the years, Janet and Dave have helped provide mobility to thousands worldwide—and they’re committed to continuing this impact for years to come through planned giving and legacy gifts.

Janet and Dave Grattan have transformed thousands of lives over the years.
Planned giving helps you bring renewed dignity, independence, freedom, and joy to people with disabilities for years to come while maintaining your present financial security.
And Thursday, October 9, is DAF Day, highlighting the incredible impact of donor-advised funds (DAFs).
A DAF is a simple, flexible way to give: you make a charitable contribution to your fund, receive an immediate tax deduction, and recommend grants to nonprofits like Free Wheelchair Mission over time.
Whether through planned giving, monthly support via Mobilize, sharing our mission with friends, or praying for our work, your partnership transforms lives, just like Ricardo’s.
