Children played, but Thuy merely watched—she lost the use of her legs from a paralytic fever when she was very young.

Thuy is the oldest of eight children in her family. She could not play like her brothers and sisters or help around the house. Thuy’s parents worked hard as farmers to provide and accommodate for her as best as they could. She has always felt like a burden because she was unable to earn money to help meet the needs of her family.

Thuy had a dream to be fully a part of her family. After receiving a wheelchair, her dream came true. “The first thing I want to do is to find a way to serve my family. I want to try and thank them for all the years they have cared for me,” she said. “Now, I’ll be able to help in the kitchen—all by myself I will ladle rice into bowls for our meal.”

“Thank you so much,” she said. “I never imagined such a gift!”
