Mother and Son Find Mobility

Mrs. Feng Huimin lives in the Youyijie District in China. Her husband suffers from cerebral palsy, a medical condition that causes disability because of its negative affect on motor development. When her son was born, Mrs. Huimin discovered that he also was afflicted with CP.

When I learned that my son also had this disease, I was very sad,” said Mrs. Huimin. “It is bad enough that my husband cannot manage himself, but to see my son suffer as well is very difficult.”

Life has been very hard for the family. Mrs. Huiman has not been able to hold down a job because so much of her time is consumed carrying for both her husband and son. The family is very poor and struggles to make ends meet.

“My son’s education is the most important thing,”she said. “It is the only way he will ever be able to change his life.” So, to make sure that her son can attend school, Mrs. Huiman carries her son every day on her back. In the afternoon, she returns to carry him home.

A wheelchair was an expense the family could not afford, even for their beloved son. “I dreamed of a wheelchair,” Mrs. Huiman said, “but this hard life killed that dream.”

Then, one day, officials from FWM’s partner in the region visited, and inquired after the health status of the family. Soon a wheelchair arrived, and life would never be the same.

“Mom!” Mrs. Huimin’s son cried out with joy. “Now you will not have to carry me on your back any more!” Mrs. Huimin was grateful for the gift of mobility. “Your support for my son greatly encourages me,” she said, “and makes me happy in spirit.”

“I want to thank you with a deep bow.”
