The Following Story comes from Missionaries of the Poor, our Jamaican distribution partners:

    Anthonrita

Anthonrita has the distinction of living in a Missionaries of the Poor shelter longer than any other resident - approximately 23 years. The Missionaries estimate her age to be over 30. She has had cerebral palsy since birth.  She was abandoned by her parents and left in a state run center that had deplorable conditions. A terrible fire swept through the building while it was occupied by mentally handicapped residents. Tragically, 144 people perished in the fire.  Anthonrita fortunately escaped the fire and was taken in by the Missionaries of the Poor. Although she has live a life filled with tragedy, she is joyful and loving to all who spend time with her. Her life has improved with her wheelchair. She can now live a happier life and feels the warmth of the sun!
