Greetings and Happy Friday!

September 30, 2005

Here are some highlights of the week:

  • No containers made it to their final destinations this week, but 12 are in route and 21 are in production. To date we have provided 87,879 wheelchairs (delivered or in process)!
  • We received a very affirming and encouraging phone call from Franklin Graham of Samaritans’ Purse.
  • Shipping costs are rising quickly, and we are considering an increase in our costs to compensate for this. We will have more news on this next week.

This story comes from our World Vision partners in Ghana:

“As a Jehovah’s Witness, I took special delight in walking to homes to preach the gospel, little did I know that the surgery I was about to undergo was going to be the last time I was going to walk on my own”, said 49 year old Samuel.

Samuel has six children and lives in a small farming community. He was a strong man who suffered from mistake a surgeon made during a routine hernia operation, and he lost the use of his legs. As a farmer planting maize, cassava and plantain, the result was the loss of his means of income. He has to depend on his wife’s small trading to support himself and his six children. But the painful thing according to him is the sudden dependence of these same people to move around, even when he is in the home.

Samuel now says he sees the beginning of a fresh start of life for his family. He doesn’t depend on the family members for his movements. This frees his wife and family members to spend more time on their work and that improves the family income. In his own words, “This is the beginning of a new life for me”.
