Greetings and Happy Friday!

September 2, 2005

Often we ask you to pray for the physically disabled in developing countries, our staff or our volunteers. Today we ask that you direct your prayers to those whose lives are upside down because of hurricane Katrina.

Here is one highlight of the past week:

  • Containers reached South Africa and Uganda

This story comes from Erik Anderson of Bridges of Hope.

I got the opportunity to distribute wheelchairs donated by Free Wheelchair Mission. Working in the Cape Flats in South Africa, we are constantly faced with tremendous need. These needs aren’t often met with your standard, “Jesus loves you, so let me pray for you. Goodbye.” It was awesome to take part in the very tangible ministry of distributing wheelchairs to some of those who so desperately need them in the slums outside of Cape Town.
I was definitely struck when I walked into the room and saw a gamut of reasons why these particular people needed wheelchairs. There were those who were elderly and clearly because of aging no longer were able to get around. There were those who due to accident or injury were now impaired and unable to walk at all. And there were those who because of developmental challenges, whether mental or physical, who so direly needed a wheelchair so their caretakers no longer needed to carry them to get them around. Being able to bless these people with something so simple yet so fundamentally life changing was an experience I deeply value. It would be great if life here and ministry in general was always so simple and yet profoundly tangible.
