Greetings and Happy Friday!

July 29, 2005

Here are highlights from the past week, and what a week it was:

  • All the work, the prayers from the world around, the late night and early morning toil – all of this led to the success of our 2nd annual Magic of Mobility Event beyond our dreams! Thanks to the incredible generosity of you, our supporters, we raised over $500,000! More than 500 people attended our event.
  • We had two more radiothons, one in New York and the other in Chicago. Between the two we raised enough funds for three more containers, and now we have over 600 new donors.
  • Containers arrived in Costa Rica and Mexico

Here is a story from Robert Kalatschan of Giving it Back to Kids. He is our distribution partner in Viet Nam:

Our destination was a remote village in Quang Nam province. I am without the words to describe what I experienced. Here was this mass of people crawling, walking on their hands, walking as only a person with a twisted body can, using home made crutches or many just being carried. It reminds me of what you see in a biblical times movie of the disfigured coming to see our Lord. I have never seen or felt anything like this in my life. When asked about how the wheelchair might influence their lives, most just cried. Almost every one said they never dreamed that they could ever have a wheelchair. One man came walking on wood blocks attached to his hands. I got to do something I will probably remember the rest of my life, and that was put the camera down and simply lift him into his wheelchair. After giving me a huge smile and hug, off he went.

The word “changed” falls way short of what has happened to most of these peoples’ lives today. I saw what appeared like a new sense of happiness, self worth and pride as they sat in their new wheelchairs. I want to thank Free Wheelchair Mission for this generous gift.
