February 17 , 2006

Here are some highlights for the week:

  • Last week we mentioned our success with our Run for Mobility marathon in Huntington Beach, CA. Facing much less agreeable weather, our loyal supporters from Boston had their own Run for Mobility 5K event, and raised $1,531.17! Boston Team Runs for Mobility
  • Next Friday (2/24) ABC Channel 7 in Los Angeles plans to run a story about us on their 11:00 PM news.

Our partner Scaria in Kerala, India noticed this story in the Malayala Manorama News, and he translated it for us:

Joseph in his wheelchairWheeling into the world of uncluttered love, Joseph and Selmi are wed as life partners upon the wheels of hope. The Free Wheelchair Mission unites hearts too.

Today Joseph married Selmi at the Good Sheppard Church at Kottayam with new hope in life. Joseph exchanged the wedding rings while sitting in his wheelchair which he received three years ago from the Free Wheelchair Mission.

Joseph was actively supporting his parents by running a small restaurant. In 2001 as he was traveling on a bike when he met with an accident, severely damaging his backbone and spinal column. The doctors lost all hope in helping him.

Joseph’s life changed when he attended a match making function organized for the physically challenged. By curiosity, Selmi decided to visit the function and to sympathize with those physically disabled. It was love at first sight, as Selmi was attracted towards Joseph. Initially Selmi’s parents were not happy with a proposal as Joseph is a handicapped person. But Selmi’s father wanted most to fulfill the dream of his daughter.

Sitting in his wheelchair, Joseph warmly welcomed the friends and relatives. The happiness of Joseph radiated from his face. Joseph said "Until I met Selmi, my best companion was my wheelchair, my wheels of hope. And now for me, Selmi is my life partner, my new wheels of hope."
