Greetings and Happy Friday!

January 27 , 2006

Here are some highlights for the week:

  • You still have time to participate in our first marathon, Feb. 5 in Huntington Beach, CA. You can run or walk, and raise funds for wheelchairs for those who can do neither. Check out our website for details.
  • Containers of 550 wheelchairs arrived in Tonga, Fiji, Guatemala, Honduras and the Philippines.

This week's story comes from our recent mission trip to Danang, Viet Nam. There we met Duong in her little bed. She is 75, and 13 years ago she had a hypertensive stroke. She has not left that bed for 13 years.

It was a beautiful sunny morning, and we asked her if she would like to go for a stroll in her new wheelchair. Her extended family followed us as we led her down the narrow path between very tiny homes. We were mostly in the shade, but whenever we entered sunshine Duong would smile and close her eyes, and soak up the radiance. We realized how she missed feeling the sun on her face.

As we got farther away from her home, she asked us not to bring her to the street. We asked why, and this is what she said: "Next week is our Lunar New Year celebration. People living on my street have not seen me for 13 years. I want to surprise them when they have their parade."
