Peggy
Fleming to be Guest Speaker
1968 Olympic Gold Medal Winner Honors FWM Event |
We
are honored to announce that Peggy Fleming will
be our guest speaker for the pre-race dinner to be held at
the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort on February 3.
ABC
televised the 1968 Winter Olympic Games live and in
color for the first time ever, and the enduring image
from that coverage will always be of Peggy Fleming's
free-skating program. It was a program that won
her the Gold Medal by 88.2 points over her closest
competitor. It was the only gold medal the U.S.
won in the 1968 Winter Olympics. Fleming turned
pro shortly after the Olympics, and six months
after winning the gold, she starred in an Emmy
Award-winning TV special, and went on to make four
more TV specials.
In 1998, on the 30th anniversary
of her 1968 Olympic victory, Peggy Fleming was
diagnosed with breast cancer. Undaunted, Peggy
took on "another Olympics, a life Olympics," ultimately
emerging victorious once again. Since then she
has shared her hopes and fears and, ultimately,
her own triumph, with people around the world.
And she has become, for thousands of women and
their families and friends, one of the living symbols
of the victories that can be achieved against life's
greatest challenges, from Olympic sports to the
fight for life against breast cancer and other
life-threatening illnesses.
A
recipient of numerous honors, Peggy is a member
of the United States Olympic Hall of Fame and the
United States Figure Skating Association Hall of
Fame. Since 1981, she has excelled as a figure
skating analyst for ABC and continues to provide
commentary for figure skating events. In 1999,
Sports Illustrated named her one of the most influential
athletes of the 20th century. She has served on
several community project boards and was the national
spokesperson for the National Osteoperosis Foundation.
Her roles also include wife, mother (and grandmother!),
and women's health advocate.
